A MESSAGE FROM THE BUCYRUS PRESERVATION SOCIETY:

The Bucyrus Preservation Society (BPS) is a not-for-profit corporation with primary offices located at 700 E. Rensselaer St., Bucyrus, Ohio. BPS was founded through the efforts or Rob Neff Jr., James Croneis and Dave Pirnstill in April 2001 for the purpose of preserving the city of Bucyrus in the memories, bricks, mortar and the hearts and minds of people who reside in or visit Bucyrus. The BPS consists of a board of trustees who live in Bucyrus and who have a sense of appreciation for our local heritage and culture. Bucyrus has a rich heritage and is proud to have many properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Listed sites include a church, a business establishment, a mausoleum, the Bucyrus Commercial Historic District, six homes and a former railroad depot. BPS was founded to protect these and other significant city buildings.

Soon after the formation of BPS, the group took ownership of the former Toledo & Ohio Central (T&OC) Railroad Depot in east Bucyrus. The High Victorian Gothic style depot, built in 1892, is one of only a few community landmarks that have withstood the test of time. The T&OC Depot was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 10, 1980. Restoration of the depot, which has suffered neglect for many years, has become a major project that BPS is accomplishing through a daughter organization, the Bucyrus Station Association (BSA).

The Bucyrus Station Association was formed in April of 2001 and now has over 100 members dedicated to the preservation of the depot. The BSA will eventually handle all responsibilities of the station which will become a welcoming and activity center as well as an interactive industrial museum. Please take time to visit the T&OC Depot section of this website for a look into the past and a refreshing look to the future.

After raising over $300,000 and with community volunteers and gifts in kind the restoration of the Toledo and Ohio Central Depot in Bucyrus OH is nearly complete.  The gothic Victorian structure built in 1892 was registered on the National Trust in 1980 and had fallen into disrepair.  The structure is being restored to its original integrity and will be the home of a transportation and industrial museum for our community.

To date volunteers have:

Rebuilt all 25 stained glass transom windows, rebuilt the finial and ridge cap in solid copper, rebuilt interior quarter sawn oak wains-coating, replaced windows, stripped the existing woodwork, stripped, primed, and replaced tin ceiling tiles, installed a new poplar ceiling in baggage room, built a new staircase, dry-walled and insulated the walls, salvaged solid oak flooring, and donated thousands of hours for the restoration effort.  The exterior of the brick building has been completely cleaned and tuck pointed, a new slate roof and built in copper box gutters installed, new electrical service is about 90% complete and block grant money is now available for the HVAC.  In addition two new ornate fireplaces are ready for installation and all of the ornate woodwork is on site and ready to be installed.

We wish to extend our sincere appreciation to the students of the Bucyrus High School media class who have prepared this website. Hopefully, through our website and its many links, you will learn more about BPS, the Bucyrus community and heritage preservation.
